womankind, arise!...and march back to the kitchen

One of the big things I wanted to work on for my 30th year was to how to be more skillful in the ways that the women of the olden days were. Women's lib, shwomen's lib. I like that stuff. I envy how much they knew how to do.

Sure, I know more about Photoshop and programming a DVR than they do, but so what?! I want skills. I want my hands to be busy. I want hard work. And I figure, there's no reason I shouldn't know and couldn't know how to do all that good stuff.

So, to continue on with turning back the century, I've made my first homemade apple pie. How American am I?! (So, I didn't watch the "emaculation"-inauguration...I can make apple pie!) It went well. I even managed to figure out how to use one more thing in my food storage...apple chips. They worked better than I thought they would. (They also make awesome applesauce.)

My crust work has some room to improve, but it tasted good no matter.

The finished masterpiece. A little vanilla ice cream on the side and mmm mmm.

And here's my second apron. It was much more fun to make than the first and I love wearing it. Maybe Steve will model it for ya'll later. He will look fabulous!

Again, I love this pocket. I don't know what it is with pockets. I love them. They're pretty and functional. You can't beat something that is both!

Oh, wait...what was that?
Yes, I think Betty Friedan just turned in her grave.
There, there Betty.

  5. I LOVE cooking! Anything: roasting turkeys, baking pies, making alfredo sauce, french bread...I love trying new things! I am so glad that there are other modern women out there who don't think these things are degrading. My grandma probably thinks all of these new-age chicks are undignified. I tend to agree. What's wrong with baking? Look at Hell's Kitchen! I have yet to can anything, so kudos to you. When they tell you to sanitize the jars, it freaks me out. I am so paranoid that they won't be clean enough and my food will get moldy.

  6. I haven't done any canning at home yet. I've been to the Cannery, but that's totally different. I am very afraid of doing it at home.

BUT, as soon as strawberries are in season, I'm gonna attempt some jam making...and say a little prayer over each jar that they're sanitary and gross-free.

  7. And yes, cinnamon and sugar on top. All you'd have to do is take a little drive, Dan...and it could all be yours...

  8. Amy you have done awesome!!! You really need to live closer.

Canning is pretty easy, but I wouldn't suggest doing it alone. I have grandma there to help me the first time I attempted it. We did peaches and pears. It went pretty well, but we had her experience. It was delicious!!
